Step 1: Arrest, booking and the magistrate

Step 2: Posting a secured bond
A secured bond can be satisfied three ways:
Cash bond.
Someone pays the full amount to the clerk of court. It is returned at the end of the case, minus any fees or fines, if the person made every court date.
Property bond.
Real estate with enough equity is pledged to the court.
Surety bond through a bail bondsman.
The bondsman, backed by an insurance company (the surety), guarantees the full amount to the court. The family pays the bondsman a premium.
Step 3: What the bondsman does
A licensed North Carolina bail bondsman:
- Verifies the person’s custody, charge and bond amount.
- Assesses the risk that the person will not appear, using the charge, history and community ties.
- Takes a co-signer (indemnitor) who agrees to pay the premium and, if the bond is forfeited, the full bond.

- Monitors the case, sends court reminders, and stays in contact through the final court date.
