Felony and Large Bail Bonds in North Carolina

Felony bonds in our region run from a few thousand dollars to well into six figures. The premium on a large bond is real money, and the jail will not release the person until the full bond is posted. Champion Bail Bonding Solutions writes large felony bonds at every jail in our nine counties, structures the premium so families can manage it, and explains collateral before anyone signs.

How felony bonds are set

After booking, a magistrate sets an initial bond using the charge, the person’s record, ties to the community and any state or local bond guidelines. Felony bonds are typically far higher than misdemeanor bonds.

For some charges, such as certain drug trafficking offenses, the magistrate may decline to set bond and leave it to a judge at first appearance. The judge can also raise or lower the magistrate’s figure. Types of bonds in North Carolina.

Returned at the end

Collateral comes back when the case ends and the bond is exonerated.

Security on big numbers

Collateral on large bonds

For bonds above a threshold, we usually require collateral in addition to a co-signer. Collateral secures the full bond amount in case the defendant fails to appear. It is returned when the case ends and the bond is exonerated.

Real estate with sufficient equity, documented by a deed and a recent value estimate.

Vehicle titles for vehicles owned outright.

Cash held in trust.

Other assets case by case.

We never take collateral we do not explain, and we document its return.

No surprises

Every obligation is on the table before a signature goes down.

Before anyone signs

What the co-signer takes on

On a large bond the co-signer’s obligation is large too: if the defendant skips court and the bond is forfeited, the co-signer owes the full bond amount. We go through this carefully.

Most co-signers on felony bonds are close family who know the defendant will appear. We add court date reminders and check-ins to keep it that way. If a date is ever missed, read what happens after a missed court date before assuming the worst.

When the number is out of reach

Bond too high? Reduction is possible

Judges reduce felony bonds regularly when the defense shows strong community ties, employment, a clean record, or that the amount is out of proportion. We help gather the documentation and refer you to an attorney who can file the motion — see bond reduction.
